the tuff cellar

For us, our winery means everything. There is a perfect interaction between what we make, and the place where we make it, to the point where we couldn’t even imagine any other place, not even toying with the idea.

Cantine di Marzo is its historical winery since 1647 and if this is mentioned in our name and logo, it is not by chance. It is here that for nearly four centuries, we have seen harvested grapes come in before being turned into wine and it is still here that the bottles are labeled before being sent around the world.

More than a mere place of production, our winery is also a meeting place, an occasion to meet people.

Each year, the number of passionate visitors steadily increase. They come from around the world to learn, first hand, of the history of the Greco di Tufo, to see where and how the Cantine di Marzo wines are born and appreciate their tasting, precisely here where it all happens.

the heart of production

IN THE HEART OF TUFO

Our winery is located in Tufo, in the province of Avellino, less than two minutes’ walk from the village main square.

It is very easy to find. All you have to do is ask a Tufo local who will instantly show you where it is. Should you be in the village center, don’t be surprised if someone will tell you “Cantine di Marzo is right under your feet signore.”

Yes, our winery is situated inside the hill on which Tufo is built. Should some skeptic look for empirical right evidence, all he would have to do is dig, not too deep under in different Tufo side streets to end up in the middle of the winery where the Greco di Tufo and other wines of Cantine di Marzo are made.

But to reach us by foot, is much easier and far less dangerous. All you have to do is go down the street and staircase that starts in piazza Umberto I, the village central square, and you will reach the entrance of the winery.

When we said that the production of Cantine di Marzo is in the heart of Tufo, this was not meant metaphorically.

characteristics
architectural

We, at Cantine di Marzo, have not called on any modern international architect, this because, contrary to most other wine making colleagues, we are in a historical structure, a feat of medieval engineering.

When Scipione came to Tufo in 1647 with his precious grape variety that would one day become Greco di Tufo, it didn’t take him long to understand that those tunnels, dug in the Tufo rock on which the village was built, could become ideal for winemaking. A constant high level of humidity, a constant temperature all year round

an absence of natural light, and, to complete this, a series of tunnels and caves on various levels. So, it’s thanks to gravity that most of the wine and must can be moved without traumatising such a delicate matter, especially in the initial stages of vinification.

Over centuries, the tunnels and caves have been adapted so as to be up to date with the standards that each period requires, but beyond these minor changes, the original structure has been intentionally preserved.

winemaking Today

It is not an overstatement to say that Cantine di Marzo is a site of wine-making archeology, in spite it being fully active. Here in the winery, we continue using the same spaces that were used in 1647.

Naturally the ancient equipment has been replaced by more modern tools. So not only do we guarantee very high-quality wines, but we also preserve the original spirit of Scipione di Marzo, ensuring that each wine expresses to its most its personality whilst putting forward all the major features of our local grape varieties.
