vigna ortale

No, we haven’t invented teleportation, and virtual reality doesn’t quite capture our interest. However, we guarantee that by closing your eyes, you will be whisked away to the heart of the Greco di Tufo DOCG production area—the Santa Lucia district, to be precise.

Your senses will capture the same aromas and flavors that we experience every time we reach Vigna Ortale, the land where we cultivate the grapes for this eponymous Greco di Tufo DOCG Riserva.

If Vigna Ortale and our other three Greco di Tufo Crus are so special, it is for this very reason: each one is crafted solely from grapes grown in a single, specific vineyard.

There is a direct correspondence between the natural environment of Vigna Ortale and the wine in your glass. In fact, Vigna Ortale is our first estate vineyard to be managed entirely under certified organic farming.

5.000

Bottles Available (Approximately)

It may happen that the supply of Greco di Tufo Riserva Vigna Ortale does not meet the demand. At Cantine di Marzo, we willingly accept the subversion of the first law of economics rather than violate the most important Law of Nature. There is no excuse: if the Ortale vineyard produces enough grapes for only about 5,000 bottles a year, that is all there is. We know how much Vigna Ortale is loved, but if you find a specific vintage is unavailable, please do not be disappointed. With such a limited production, it is impossible to satisfy everyone.

The Vineyard: Vigna Ortale

Vigna Ortale is located in the Santa Lucia district of Tufo.

It consists of about 3 hectares bordering our Vigna Serrone. It is fascinating how, despite sharing the exact same limestone and clay substrate, the different sun exposure alone gives Vigna Ortale such distinct nuances in aroma and taste compared to the vineyard right next door.

But the exposure is not the only difference. While Vigna Serrone is famous for our oldest vines, here at just over 400 meters above sea level, we cultivate our younger vines, with an average age of 20 years and a western exposure.

Despite their “youth,” the unique characteristics of this vineyard result in an extremely mature, fine, and elegant wine.

Intensely balsamic, Vigna Ortale stands out among our Greco di Tufo Riserva Crus for its peculiar and inviting smoothness and balsamic notes.

Production Method

Following the “Zonation Project” (Progetto Zonazione) developed by our Winemaker Vincenzo Mercurio, Vigna Ortale is produced exclusively with grapes grown and harvested in its namesake vineyard.

We ensure that the grapes from each vineyard are kept strictly separate during harvest and vinification. This guarantees that every Greco di Tufo Riserva expresses scents and profiles that are impossible to artificially recreate, as they are solely tied to the uniqueness of each specific plot.

The free-run juice—the most precious part—is obtained from the first pressing. Transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the fermentation process is carried out by selected indigenous yeasts.

While nine months of resting on the lees provide complexity and structure, the wine requires a full 12 months of bottle aging (following light filtering) before it can finally bear the name Greco di Tufo Riserva and be released to the market.

the label

To the untrained eye, it might look like a curious illustration, but the allegory chosen for the Vigna Ortale label is a true statement of intent.
Famam extendere Factis” is written on the trim of the hot air balloon, meaning “To extend one’s fame through deeds.” This is the motto of the di Somma family:

“Where many wineries might do anything just to get noticed, at Cantine di Marzo we decided to set our modus operandi in stone: working hard so that our wines are always the best they can be.”
