ANNI VENTI

The First Greco di Tufo Sparkling Wine in Campania Region.

Forgive us if we return to our multi-century history to introduce Anni Venti, our Greco di Tufo Traditional Method sparkling wine.

It is not vanity, but a necessity to tell the story exactly as it unfolded. At Cantine di Marzo, we have the privilege of dealing with storymaking rather than just storytelling.

It is a well-documented fact that we are one of the oldest wineries in Southern Italy. It is equally established that the vision to produce a sparkling Greco di Tufo originated here.

The first-ever bottle of sparkling Greco di Tufo was born in our historic cellar in the heart of Avellino in 1926. A century later, we honor this legacy with our Greco di Tufo DOCG Sparkling Riserva Traditional Method Extra Brut—the first of its kind in Campania.

Since the 2020 Vintage, thanks to 48 months of aging on the lees, it is also one of the few to hold the prestigious DOCG Riserva classification.

Anni Venti is our tribute to those visionary minds of that “effervescent” era. A special mention goes to our first enologist, Fiore Bottiglieri, a native of Tufo who was among the first in Campania to recognize the immense sparkling potential of the Greco grape.

The Tufo-France Connection: Wine as a Bridge for Europe

Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while the winds of war began to blow across the continent, the world of oenology was already experimenting with international solidarity.

When the phylloxera plague devastated French vineyards, compromising the production of wine and Champagne, French producers turned to the best for help.

For years, trains filled with Irpinian white wines departed from the Tufo railway station. Cantine di Marzo played a vital role, exporting significant quantities of Greco di Tufo to France.

Through these commercial ties and the exchange of knowledge with French colleagues, the idea was born: to craft an Italian Traditional Method sparkling wine using the Champenoise technique applied to Greco di Tufo grapes

Only 3,000 Bottles: A DOCG Riserva Traditional Method

Our Anni Venti production is limited to approximately 3,000 bottles per year. As a DOCG Riserva Traditional Method, it strictly follows the rigorous standards of the production disciplinary.

Harvest: Hand-picked in mid-October from our estate vineyards.
Estate-Bottled: Unlike many others, the entire production cycle takes place within the historic tuff walls of our cellar in Tufo.
Soft Pressing: We monitor the grapes daily, ensuring a gentle pressing to maintain the highest quality without stressing the fruit.

Fermentation: Conducted in temperature-controlled stainless steel.
Refinement: The base wine rests on fine lees for 9 months.
Second Fermentation: The wine ages on the lees in the bottle for 48 months.
Disgorgement: Following disgorgement (dégorgement), the bottles rest in the cellar for at least 4 more months.

After nearly 60 months (5 years) from the harvest, the grapes are finally transformed into Greco di Tufo DOCG Sparkling Riserva. Anni Venti is ready to be uncorked.
