Greco di Tufo Docg Riserva Vigna Serrone: “Nomen omen,” as the ancients said—and never has it been truer.
You will be hard-pressed to find a Greco di Tufo quite as intriguing as this. If you are a fan of semiotics or simply curious, you may have already guessed why.
This wine—one of the four Greco di Tufo DOCG Riserva Single Vineyards produced by Cantine di Marzo—is called Vigna Serrone because it is crafted exclusively from grapes harvested in our eponymous Serrone vineyard. Every step of the vinification process ensures an absolute separation between these grapes and all others that enter our cellar.
From the fruit grown on the 5 hectares of our Vigna Serrone to the few, select bottles that age for at least 12 months before being released as a Riserva: the process is simple and transparent.
Every time you taste Vigna Serrone, or any of our other three Riserva Crus, you will clearly distinguish the character of the old vines and the specific soils from which they draw their life.
This strictly limited number of bottles of Greco di Tufo Riserva Vigna Serrone represents the combined devotion of our team and Mother Nature.
We enthusiastically embraced the vision of our Winemaker, Vincenzo Mercurio, to produce a wine that serves as a direct expression of the exceptional characteristics of our individual vineyards.
Together, we have followed a path that is as demanding as it is rigorous: entering the vineyard every day, monitoring the health of the vines and clusters, and establishing a deep symbiosis with the ecosystem of each vineyard to produce a Greco di Tufo Riserva with a true soul.
While there are many shortcuts to increase production, we limit ourselves to only 5,000 bottles because we know these ancient vines perfectly. We know what to expect from them, and we have no intention of forcing their hand.
In more challenging vintages, there may be a few hundred bottles fewer, but there will certainly never be more.
5 hectares with an exceptionally favorable exposure, where we cultivate Greco di Tufo vines up to 80 years old.
Vigna Serrone is our oldest vineyard. It is located in Tufo, in the Santa Lucia district, perched on a gentle hill at about 400 meters above sea level with a south-east exposure. The vineyard offers panoramic views that are always deeply appreciated by those who visit the birthplace of our wines.
Here, guests can experience firsthand the predominantly clay and limestone soil. Later, back at the cellar, they will rediscover in the glass the remarkable structure and gustatory intensity that only this specific terroir and these ancient vines can bestow.
The vines are cultivated using the ancient “Tendone Avellinese” (overhead trellis) system, respecting the winemaking traditions of Tufo and enhancing this extraordinary wine with a pleasing smoothness and roundness.
As with all Cantine di Marzo wines, everything begins with the free-run juice—the juice from the very first pressing, which is undoubtedly the finest part.
The stainless steel of our tanks and the use of strictly selected indigenous yeasts allow for a carefully managed fermentation under constant temperature control. We let the wine rest on its lees for nine months to gain complexity and structure; only then, after light filtering, do we proceed with bottling.
From that moment, for the following 12 months, every bottle of Greco di Tufo Vigna Serrone rests safely, protected by the naturally cool temperatures of our historic cellar.
This patient journey is how Vigna Serrone becomes a Riserva.
Così come per gli altri vini firmati Cantine di Marzo, tutto inizia dal Mosto Fiore, ovvero dal succo ottenuto dalla prima pigiatura dell’uva, senza dubbio la parte migliore.

Every Cantine di Marzo label tells a story that goes beyond aesthetics. For the Greco di Tufo Docg Riserva Vigna Serrone, we chose an illustration that invites the viewer into a past that is both historical and metaphysical.
“With the Vigna Serrone label, we wanted to celebrate the Cantine di Marzo team and all the people whose work has allowed this estate to span nearly four centuries. Our long history has seen its share of difficult moments; if we have overcome them, it is thanks to the courage and spirit of innovation with which we have always faced them. There is no storm that can frighten us.”
Ferrante di Somma, CEO of Cantine di Marzo

Do you know the other Greco di Tufo DOCG Riserva crus?
Vigna Serrone isn’t the only Greco di Tufo DOCG Riserva cru from Cantine di Marzo.
Vigna Laure, Vigna Ortale, and Mulino Giardino, also Riservas, are produced using grapes harvested from three specific, distinct vineyards, just like Vigna Serrone.
