FIANO DI AVELLINO

THE DOCG WHITE WINE OF IRPINIA

It is true: Greco di Tufo made us world-famous. However, that hasn’t stopped us from testing our skills against the other great DOCG white wine of Irpinia: Fiano di Avellino.

While the origins of Greco are debated, the “how, when, and why” of Fiano’s arrival in the province of Avellino are shrouded in even deeper mystery.

To this day, it is impossible to determine with certainty whether the vines came from the Apuan Alps, the Peloponnese, or elsewhere. What is certain, however, is that Fiano di Avellino is anything but simple to cultivate—not least because it is known among industry professionals as one of the white varieties with the absolute lowest yields.

With such characteristics, you can see why it is the perfect wine for us. Beyond being located in Irpinia—its ideal production area—we have wholeheartedly embraced the philosophy of “Quality over Quantity” (Poco ma Buono). It is the perfect wine for you, too.

Fiano di Avellino has been providing great satisfaction since at least the 13th century, when records first noted how beloved it already was. Yet, due to its low profitability, it nearly disappeared in the 1960s, almost entirely replaced by other varieties. The credit for saving Fiano di Avellino and elevating it to greatness belongs undoubtedly to Angelo Mastroberardino, one of Irpinia’s greatest winemakers of all time. Driven by an intuitive vision and a love for his land, he brought this fantastic Irpinian wine to the attention of connoisseurs worldwide.

Official and definitive consecration came in 2003 when the Ministry of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies granted it the DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) status—one of the highest recognitions for quality and territorial authenticity.

Today, after those complicated years, Fiano is so highly regarded that it is grown in Cilento, Puglia, Basilicata, and other parts of Southern Italy.

You will forgive us, however, if we indulge in a moment of pride: while excellent Fiano can be produced outside Irpinia, only Fiano di Avellino can bear the prestigious DOCG designation.

Production: Fiano di Avellino Cantine di Marzo

The grapes used for our Fiano di Avellino DOCG are grown in the vineyards of Lapio and Montefalcione, two municipalities where the Fiano grape reaches its finest expression.

Here, at approximately 550 meters above sea level, 25-year-old vines are cultivated using raggiera techniques—an ancient tradition that, while rare today, continues to yield grapes of extraordinary quality.

After a strictly manual harvest, the clusters are transported to our historic cellars in Tufo, still within the Fiano di Avellino DOCG production zone.

The process begins with pressing and transferring the free-run juice into stainless steel tanks for temperature-controlled fermentation. The wine then rests on its lees for 6 months to acquire the perfect complexity and structure before being filtered, bottled, and stored at the ideal cellar temperature.

Production is considered complete only when the approximately 6,000 annual bottles are deemed ready by our Winemaker, Vincenzo Mercurio. The result is a fresh, sapid wine with aromas of citrus, flowers, and honey—a wine that seduces and conquers through its sophisticated complexity.

The Label

A sense of the fantastic dominates the label of our Fiano DOCG, illustrated with 19th-century style and creativity:

“An elegant man engaged in a dreamlike flight, sustained by his burning desire to explore the unknown rather than by the certainty of his means. Drinking Cantine di Marzo Fiano di Avellino DOCG requires no technical knowledge, but rather a certain predisposition of the soul—certainly repaid with the wonder of true emotion”

Ferrante di Somma, CEO of Cantine di Marzo
